Baumann’s open house, the first to be dubbed Labels and Finishing Days, staged at its Solms facility in the centre of Germany, has been deemed a success by the owner of Wohlenberg and Perfecta, and by the other finishing equipment manufacturers present. These included MBO, Blumer and Bograma each of which is represented by Friedheim International in the UK.
The focus was on finishing for labels with handling systems for sheet printed labels, rotary die cutting from Bograma and Blumer with MBO demonstrating the new K80 folder for the interest of commercial printers. This was complemented by a Wohlenberg Quickbinder.
It was enough to attract a party of printers from the UK, enough to rival Swiss and German printers attending the event. The K80 proved a big drawer.
“Printers were very happy that we’ve finally made a folding machine for the 70x100 paper format with a price to performance ration that is a perfect fit,” says Hagan Wetzel, MBO technical sales manager.
The K80 is a combination folder running at 230 m/min and fills the gap between the ultra high speed K8RS and manual set up K70. It includes extensive automation to cope with short runs with an emphasis on reducing makeready times. There are options on the configuration according to customer requirements. “Speed and quality of fold is perfect for UK B1 commercial printers,” says Freideim’s national post-press sales manager.
The concept refers to the success that Hunkeler has had with Innovation Days and IST has had with UV Days as extended open houses that involve other manufacturers that do not compete with the host but which complement the host.
It provides additional value to printers that attend. Last week, that included Alan Ryan, owner of pharmaceutical leaflet specialist Technoprint in Winsford. Despite having visited Interpack a few weeks ago, the return trip to Germany was worthwhile, he says. “The Baumann Open house was a really good and inspiring exhibition. It was great to see all the up and coming technologies and meeting the actual manufacturers and seeing what they were getting up to and what they had in store with future technologies was really eye opening.”
A common thread in the events where Friedheim has hosted customers this year has been automation as a means to increasing productivity and add value to the finishing departments.
