Belgian corrugated board group VPK has acquired a 30% stake in Corrboard, the corrugated board plant in Lincolnshire that is owned by a consortium of converters including GarthWest and Swanline Print.
Corrboard was set up with a 2.8 metre wide corrugated to provide high quality sheets to a group of end converters to be turned into packaging or display units. As well as GarthWest and Swanline the owners include Beaucrest Packaging Solutions, Dairi-Pak, Fencor Packaging and GWP. The plant was also set by US company Corrugated Synergies International, whose stake VPK has acquired. The plant near Scunthorpe opened in 2012.
Corrboard currently produces 340 million m2 of single and double-sided corrugated board in a range of styles each year.
VPK Packaging Group’s CEO Pierre Macharis says: “CorrBoard’s modern 30 million m2 factory is impressive and with VPK’s strong management, know-how and skills, we expect to continue to operate as an independent unit with a dedicated strategy. This will deliver high service levels and a competitive product offering to the market.”
VPK already owns Rigid UK a corrugated board business in the UK that operates from plants in Desborough and Selby. The latter site has two Göpfert flexo diecutters and Desborough received a similar four colour machine almost two years ago. Sales have grown to around £100 million a year in the UK.
The group has also acquired operations in Scandinavia and Belgium to add to a network that covers France, Poland and Romania as well as Benelux and the British Isles.
A spokesman for Corrboard adds: “Our operational success will be further enhanced with VPK’s involvement and we plan to grow the current volume of 130 million m2 of sheets produced each year. We also produce 35 million m² of single-faced product from the same machine.”
Consortium member Swanline has the highest profile in adding graphics and added value effects to the Corrboard product. Its most recent development has been a metallised paper in collaboration with Slater Harrison and targeted at luxury packaging applications, namely drinks, food and personal care, with the advantage that it is recyclable.
Swanline has made acquisitions of its one, namely the Four Create Print design business. It has also signed up to the Made in Britain campaign to celebrate British manufacturing.
Rigid Containers has invested in four and six colour flexo die cutting corrugated machines for plants in the UK. Now owner VPK is investing in additional corrugating capacity for post print conversion.
