We Are Promotional has installed a bespoke inkjet press to print high quality bespoke images direct to cotton towels. The process uses reactive dye inks that spread to every part of the towel’s fibre before being fixed by steam and then drying.
Cotton towels have been a problematic material to print on and We Are Promotional believes there is an untapped market for bespoke branded towels, especially since its technique prevents what patches appearing because ink fails to reach all the fibres. Previously customers wanting to add branding to towels have had to embroider a logo or name.
Dean Jones, managing director of the Welshpool company, says: “We have struggled to get the level of quality we desire on branded towels in the past, but now with this new reactive dye printing technology we are very pleased to offer full colour bespoke branded towels, that can be printed with a photorealistic design, some of the designs we have done look so lifelike it’s hard to tell the difference.”
A spokesman adds that previous methods have given results that look “cheap and nasty” compared to the retail quality towels that it can now deliver. It will print on towels with terry loops and velour threads where the loops have been cut.
We Are Promotional has high hopes that brands will use the company for beach and gym towels, from quantities of 100 units. It can also supply retail, the hospitality trade, travel and fashion.
Nevertheless the company can reproduce more intricate designs and details than are possible with conventional towel printing methods, which print the surface of the material. The process uses a 16-colour print head but does not allow halftone printing.
It is not disclosing the partner behind the inkjet technology but We Are Promotional has extensive experience of inkjet printing through its other ranges. The towels join a more conventional range of bespoke printed items, from branded clothing, to cups, bags, USB sticks and pens, sold through its website.
We Are Promotional believes it has cracked the problem of printing high quality images on towels with a deep intense image thanks to a bespoke inkjet printing set up and reactive inks that penetrate the cotton fibres.
