Wohlenberg for Printwize lifts productivity

Witham printer Printwize has bought a new Wohlenberg guillotine and is looking to upgrade presses later this year.

Printwize is investigating how to add LED UV to one of its B1 Mitsubishi litho presses, planning to have the transition completed by the end of this year.

At the beginning of it, the Witham printer has taken delivery of a new 115 Baumann Wohlenberg guillotine to replace a similar machine installed in 2008. It was not the cheapest machine on offer, says chairman Roger Wacey, but as the the only guillotine in the company, a lot of emphasis is placed on reliability and service if needed.

Friedheim International, the UK agent for Baumann Wohlenberg, is says Wacey, “a straightforward company to work with that has old fashioned standards in that they do what they say”. This includes supplying parts well beyond the date a product has been discontinued.

“We have bee quite happy for ten years with the way we have been looked after and our staff were comfortable with the Wohlenberg,” he says. Printwize has also purchased a high speed MBO T800 folder with Navigator set up and Palamides wrapper at the delivery from Friedheim. Initial suspicion when this was installed has given way to much improved efficiency.

The new guillotine will have a similar impact. It comes with a 19" touch screen to load programmes and set a cutting sequence. Job data can also be taken via JDF. This is a step change from the machine that is being replaced. The Baumann handling equipment around the guillotine is being retained.

It will handle work from the two B1 presses and Printwize's small digital set up. “As a company we prefer having two of everything throughout our range of equipment. Having a single guillotine can be a little tricky, since if that goes down or needs maintenance we don’t have any contingency. Reliability in our guillotine is of utmost importance to us,” he says.

Wacey reckons that the guillotine is in operation for around half the day, thanks to the productivity on offer.

The next step will be to add LED UV to the five-colour Mitsubishi, having decided not to invest in a new press. Instead X-Rite colour controls have been added to both this and the six-colour machine with coater and extended delivery.

Roger Wacey looked for a dependable guillotine as without a back up machine, Printwize needs a machine that it can rely on.
